BPMB’S MANGROVE REHABILITATION PROGRAMME WITH ALAM A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

We are delighted to share the success of a recent mangrove planting programme organised by Amanah Lestari Alam (ALAM), in collaboration with Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (BPMB) and Kelab Belia Prihatin Malaysia (Belia Prihatin). The event, held on 27 May 2023, showcased our commitment to environmental conservation and the restoration of Malaysia's mangrove forests.

Led by Puan Sainursalwa Sani, BPMB's Chief Human Resource Officer, and Puan Wan Faizah Che Din, ALAM's Chief Executive Officer, over 90 BPMB employees and Belia Prihatin volunteers came together for this impactful initiative. Their collective effort focused on planting 500 mangrove saplings at Pusat Penyelidikan Kecil Hutan Paya Laut in Nibong Tebal, Penang, with the aim of rehabilitating and safeguarding the mangrove area.

The rehabilitation programme serves a twofold purpose. Firstly, it promotes environmental conservation and raises awareness about the urgent need to restore Malaysia's mangrove forests. Secondly, it aligns with the Government's ongoing "100 million tree-planting by 2025" campaign, under the "Penghijauan Malaysia" agenda initiated in 2021.

ALAM has set an ambitious goal to plant 2,000 mangrove saplings in four locations throughout Peninsular Malaysia this year. The initial mangrove planting programme took place at the Kuala Selangor Nature Park on 26 February 2023. These efforts are part of ALAM's active involvement in various environmental preservation initiatives, including public awareness campaigns and education programmes, to foster a culture of environmental responsibility through partnerships with communities, public entities and private sectors.

This mangrove rehabilitation programme is a demonstration of one of BPMB’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) pillars, which is centered around caring for the environment. It also aligns with our core purpose of delivering impact capital for national development. Through our partnership with ALAM and Belia Prihatin, we not only contribute to environmental preservation but also create positive, long-term benefits for local communities.

The involvement of the MIND and Sustainability Team played a crucial role in the programme's success. Prior to the event, they took the initiative to meet with Hj Baderul Amin Bin Abdul Hamid, the Secretary General of Seberang Perai City Council, and Norhayati Binti Sulaiman, the Director of Community Engagement Department. This engagement provided an opportunity for the team to understand and learn the developmental needs of the local communities. This also helped to enhance BPMB's brand presence and establish stronger connections with the community.

Let us take pride in our collective effort to protect and restore Malaysia's valuable wetlands. Together, we can make a significant impact on the environment and contribute to the sustainable development of our nation.
